It’s A Girl!

Sarah Victoria Annabelle McKay arrived on Monday, 12/19 at 9:50 pm CST. Both Emily and the baby are doing fine.

Here’s a pic of her when she’s literally less than 5 minutes old.

Turn OFF The Bright Lights...Geez!

Here’s another when she was a few hours old.

Zzzzz...

…And another taken just this afternoon.

Zzzzz... (redux)

As you can see, she’s looking more and more like her mom every hour, it seems. You gotta love that.

Just for good measure, here’s the happy lady at the “payment” window when we left the hospital.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Payment Lady

Okay, so some of you may remember that our son Micky-Mac (aka John Scot Micajah McKay, Jr.) was born here at home. We had been planning that with Sarah-Belle (NOT aka “Vicky-Mac”) also, but ran into just enough complication along the way that the safe route was clearly to go to the hospital.

Man, I’ll tell you…home birth is the way to go if you possibly can swing it. The “hidden” benefit is that you don’t have to wait around for like three days to go home afterward–you’re already there!

These guys at Southwest General wanted to run tests, tests and more tests…right before they checked vitals for the third time in two hours. Even in the middle of the night there were PA announcements for nurses and whatever that were specifically designed to prevent any sleep whatsoever.

And to reassure myself about that chair designed to morph into a weird hybrid of a chaise lounge and a military cot, I simply reminded myself that airlines charge like $3500 for the privilege of using such an apparatus for as long as I was going to.

But hey, on the MAJOR plus side the doctor who delivered Emily, Jr. was a true rock star. This guy, Dr. Abraham A. Alecozay (aka “Triple A”, for short) is one of the most respected baby docs in the city and has delivered over 14,000 children.

When I commented to him about how amazing that was to me, he responded with a simple, “Hey man, every one of them is special.” It brought to mind Wilt Chamberlain’s oddly similar sentiment when asked about the massive number of women he’d slept with. Outstanding.

Ckearly, his job is not work to him. I’m convinced that maternity wards are to this guy what sports bars are to most dudes. And catching babies is like drinking beer and watching SportsCenter.

Nevertheless, “Triple A” is one of those rare human beings who tend to be my favorites type of all. As much of a bad-ass as he is, he’s probably the most approachable, most down-to-earth and least pretentious M.D. I’ve ever met. The nurses and other fellow colleagues love him, as he’s one of those guys who makes everyone around him feel cooler.

Actually everyone at the hospital was great, even if the hospital itself fell short in two key areas: 1) The “nourishment room” designed especially for the Temporary Homeless (i.e. me, Sarah’s dad) was notoriously understocked…at several key times having nothing but prune juice in the fridge. Go figure 2) On Sunday night (“waiting around time”) the TV in our room had SIX channels, of which NONE were NBC…where the Ravens/Chargers game was on. Having had only three channels growing up, it still floors me that two of those three weren’t any of the six (if that makes sense).

But hey, all of that faded into Bolivian (as Mike Tyson would say) once Sarah-Belle graced our presence. She’s beautiful, smart, HEALTHY and all-around awesome. I could subsist off of prune juice and watch Univision for days as long as she’s around to entertain us and manufacture dirty diapers. Woohoo!

But I’ll be happy to leave “Triple A” and his team of uber-pros to deal with Southwest General going forward.

Be Good,

Scot McKay
